Canada’s clock map changes today as the West stops falling back

Canada’s time map changed this morning. At 2 a.m., Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada turned their clocks back an hour, but British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba and the Northwest Territories did not, and will not again under permanent daylight time. Winnipeg now shares Toronto’s time, Vancouver sits only two hours behind it, and travellers are being warned to check calendars, flights and appointments as phones and schedules adjust.

  • At 2 a.m. today, Sunday, November 1, clocks fell back one hour in Ontario, Quebec, Atlantic Canada and most of Nunavut. British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, the Northwest Territories and northwestern Ontario did not change theirs — for B.C., Alberta, Manitoba and the territories, this is the first fall with no clock change at all.
  • The new winter map: B.C.’s Pacific Time (PCT) stays at UTC-7 year-round, Alberta Time stays at UTC-6, and Manitoba stays on daylight time at UTC-5. Winnipeg now shares Toronto’s time, Vancouver is two hours behind Toronto instead of three, and Vancouver is one hour ahead of Seattle while the U.S. is on standard time.
  • British Columbians backed the move in a 2019 public engagement: 93 per cent of a record 223,273 respondents supported year-round daylight time. In Manitoba, nearly 72,000 people voted in the province’s survey, 92 per cent wanted seasonal changes ended, and 58 per cent preferred permanent daylight time.
  • The practical effects start now: Vancouver International Airport says most flights to and from places that still change clocks have been adjusted by about an hour, experts warn phones and calendars may disagree, and hockey schedules have shifted — the Vancouver Canucks will start almost a dozen Saturday games at 8 p.m., while the Calgary Flames have eight games starting at 9 p.m. and the Edmonton Oilers have seven.
  • The trade-off is darker winter mornings — on permanent daylight time, Vancouver skies can stay dark until about 9 a.m. Quebec said this week it intends to end seasonal clock changes after this fall, which would leave the patchwork smaller next year.
