Vehicle requirements

Greater Toronto Area

There are many ways to drive with Uber. Each service has its own requirements that your vehicle must meet. Does your vehicle qualify? Find out here.

Vehicle requirements

To drive with Uber in the Greater Toronto Area, your vehicle must meet these minimum requirements:

  • 4-door vehicle with independently opening doors
  • Good condition with no cosmetic damage
  • No commercial branding
  • No salvaged or rebuilt vehicles
  • Snow tires or all-weather tires installed from December 1 until April 30 the following year (Only required for PTC licensed drivers in the City of Toronto and City of Mississauga)
  • Pass a vehicle inspection by a licensed mechanic

There are many ways to drive with Uber. See all of the options below and find out which ones your vehicle qualifies for.

Vehicle model year

City of Toronto, City of Mississauga, Town of Oakville, and Brampton: Your vehicle's model year must be 7 years (2012 model year) or newer to drive with UberX, UberPool, UberXL, and Select in the City of Toronto, City of Mississauga, Town of Oakville, and Brampton.

Greater Toronto Area (GTA): If your vehicle's model year is 8 to 10 years (2009 -2011 model year) or newer, you can still drive in the GTA. Note that you will not be able to pick up riders in City of Toronto, City of Mississauga, Town of Oakville, and Brampton.

Uber Eats: If your vehicle's model year is 20 years (1999 model year) or newer, it qualifies to deliver food with Uber Eats. Check out the details below.

Registration

Uber accepts both official and temporary registration documents. The vehicle does not need to be registered in your name to qualify.

If your vehicle is 7 years (2012 model year) or newer, it must be registered in Ontario to enable pickups in the City of Toronto, City of Mississauga, Town of Oakville, and Brampton. For out-of-province registrations, you will be able to do pickups in the GTA but not in the City of Toronto, City of Mississauga, Town of Oakville, and Brampton.

Insurance

Ontario has approved an insurance policy from Intact Insurance designed specifically for ridesharing. Drivers are still required to maintain a personal insurance policy.
