🔴BREAKING: Democrats Win Both U.S. House & Senate

Democrats have seized both chambers of Congress in the U.S. midterms, winning the Senate 54 to 44 and the House with 235 seats called and leads in 26 more. The party also carried the national House vote, 60,388,225 to 47,615,932, flipping 7 Senate seats in Texas, Ohio, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, North Carolina and South Carolina.

Democrats Win Both U.S. House and Senate - the White House at dusk

• Senate result: Democrats 54 seats, Republicans 44, with 2 races still uncalled — Alaska and Mississippi. Mississippi is separated by about 1,138 votes with about 96% counted, and Alaska goes to a ranked-choice count on Nov 18, with Democrat Mary Peltola narrowly ahead of Republican Senator Dan Sullivan

• House result: Democrats have 235 seats called and lead in 26 more races; Republicans have 146 called and lead in 28 — a sharp swing from the 215 Democratic and 219 Republican seats held before the election

• National House vote: Democrats 60,388,225, Republicans 47,615,932, with about 90% of the expected vote counted, according to the Associated Press tally

• 7 Senate seats flipped to Democrats: Texas (James Talarico over Ken Paxton), Ohio (Sherrod Brown over Jon Husted), Iowa (Josh Turek), Kansas (Adam Hamilton — the state's 1st Democratic senator since 1932), Maine (Troy Jackson over Susan Collins), North Carolina (Roy Cooper) and South Carolina (Annie Andrews). Democrats also flipped the governorships in Georgia, Ohio, Iowa and Texas

• President Donald Trump accepted the results and congratulated Democrats, conceding the war with Iran played a role in the losses because it drove gasoline prices up — while insisting he would make the same decision again. He warned he will veto bills he calls insane and predicted the 2 sides will eventually work together

• Vice President JD Vance put the blame on the war in a post on X: “The reason we lost is the war.” House Speaker Mike Johnson will not continue leading House Republicans in 2027

• Hakeem Jeffries is set to become the 1st Black Speaker of the House, saying the chamber will no longer be subservient; Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said Americans voted for change — and now Democrats must deliver

• The new Congress is sworn in on Jan 3, 2027 — the 1st unified Democratic Congress since 2010. Democrats take control of committees, federal spending and investigations, with subpoena power, and a Democratic Senate can block Trump's nominees; Trump keeps the presidency and his veto, so Washington enters divided government for the final 2 years of his term

• Congress returns Nov 9, and government funding runs out after Dec 11 — the 1st test of the new balance of power
