Nigeria Ebola patient flown to Switzerland, Congo health worker killed as 4 countries deal with outbreak

Nigeria has flown its only Ebola patient to Switzerland for treatment as the Bundibugyo outbreak spreads across Africa. The woman, a Swiss citizen treated in Abuja, is stable, and Nigeria now reports no cases while monitoring 52 contacts. In Congo, a nurse was killed responding to an Ebola alert. The outbreak has passed 9,800 cases and 4,700 deaths, the deadliest in Congo’s history.

  • Nigeria’s patient — an Ugandan-born Swiss citizen and the wife of a Swiss diplomat — was medically evacuated from Abuja on Monday. She is receiving care in Geneva; her husband, who has shown no symptoms, is in isolation in Zurich.
  • Nigeria says it now has no Ebola cases. Health Minister Muhammad Pate said containment measures remain in place while 52 contacts are monitored.
  • In Bafwasende, in Congo’s Tshopo province, a nurse was killed and another health worker severely injured in a weekend attack while responding to an Ebola alert. WHO and UN officials condemned the attack.
  • Congo’s health ministry counts more than 9,800 cases and 4,700 deaths since May, across eight provinces — the deadliest Ebola outbreak in the country’s history.
  • Kenya has reported nine cases and two deaths, and on Monday released its first group of 20 contacts from quarantine.
  • Uganda, which has been declared Ebola-free, has tightened its borders, requiring citizens returning from Congo to spend 21 days in quarantine, with stepped-up screening at Entebbe airport.
  • The Bundibugyo strain driving the outbreak has no licensed vaccine and no specific treatment.
