Why a spate of gun-for-hire shootings in Toronto were likely paid for by Iran

CBC News has pinpointed 12 politically motivated, gun-for-hire shootings in Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area that appear to have been financed by Iran. The targets included synagogues, a school, businesses and the U.S. Consulate, and no one was injured. Toronto police, the RCMP and CSIS are investigating, and some alleged shooters, many of them young, have been arrested and charged.

  • CBC pinpointed 12 politically motivated, gun-for-hire shootings in Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area, and reported that no one was injured in them.
  • Many of the attacks came in the hours and days after the United States and Israel began bombing Iran on Feb. 28. Examples in the article include a synagogue attacked in early March and a shooting at the U.S. Consulate in Toronto in March.
  • The targets included synagogues, a school and businesses in the Greater Toronto Area, and the U.S. Consulate in downtown Toronto. In several incidents, addresses linked to the waste-management company GFL were also hit on the same nights.
  • The hallmarks described in the article are early-morning attacks, suspects arriving in stolen cars, handguns emptied into building entrances, and a suspect or accomplice filming the shooting on a phone.
  • Toronto police, the RCMP and CSIS are investigating whether a foreign power instigated the attacks. The Toronto police superintendent overseeing the investigation would not confirm or deny a foreign element, and said ballistic tests link firearms across the geopolitical and GFL-related shootings.
  • Some alleged shooters in Toronto have been arrested and charged. CBC reported that most suspects face charges for multiple attacks and that many are young, aged 15 to their early 20s. CBC said Iran's Foreign Ministry did not respond to its questions.
