Olivia Chow romps to victory as head of progressive new Toronto council

Toronto voters have re-elected Olivia Chow for another four years, giving her an emphatic win over Brad Bradford in Monday’s municipal election. Chow took roughly 530,000 votes in unofficial results, and several progressive allies also won council seats. She pledged a TTC fare cap, stronger renter protections, a school lunch program and more affordable housing, and says she will not use strong mayor powers.

  • Chow defeated former councillor Brad Bradford on Monday night in Ontario’s municipal elections, winning roughly 530,000 votes in unofficial results. Official results will be certified by the city clerk.
  • The race tightened after Labour Day. Bradford, who took just one per cent in the 2023 mayoral byelection, gained through 2026, and advance voting ran more than 70 per cent higher than in that byelection.
  • Chow’s campaign focused its attack on Bradford’s pledge to create a public utility company to handle Toronto’s water and wastewater, saying it would mean losing control of a well-run asset and could open the door to privatization.
  • Her campaign also ran a strong get-out-the-vote operation, backed by Progress Toronto, Ontario NDP supporters and unions, and stayed focused on her record on renters, transit fares and school nutrition.
  • Speaking to supporters at The Great Hall on election night, Chow promised to stand up for everyone in the city and to work every day to earn their trust. Bradford conceded on election night.
  • Chow’s pledges include a 10-ride TTC fare cap, enhanced protections for renters, a school lunch program, tax cuts for independent grocers and continued work on affordable housing.
  • Several high-profile progressive allies, including Nate Erskine-Smith and Mike Layton, were elected to council, giving Chow a council expected to work with her on most issues. She has said she will not use strong mayor powers.
